What is the best natural stone for patios in Ontario's climate?
In our 40 years of experience in Etobicoke, the best stones are those with low absorption rates and high density to resist freeze-thaw cycles. Granite pavers and most types of quartzite are excellent choices for their durability and resistance to weathering. Certain types of limestone and sandstone, specifically those quarried in colder North American climates, are also very reliable. We often recommend Wiarton Eramosa or Owen Sound ledge rock for their proven performance and beautiful character. We generally advise caution with some imported travertine or slate patio options, as they can be more prone to flaking or cracking if not properly rated for our climate.

How do you prevent a stone patio from becoming uneven over time?
The key to preventing an uneven patio is a robust and properly prepared base. This is where we focus the majority of our labor. We excavate a minimum of 12 inches, which is below the typical frost line in Etobicoke. This deep foundation is then filled with granular 'A' aggregate in 4-inch lifts, with each lift being mechanically compacted to 98% Standard Proctor Density. This creates a solid, interlocking base that will not shift. Proper landscape drainage, including a consistent 1-2% slope away from the house, is also critical. How long does a typical natural stone patio installation take?
For an average-sized patio (200-400 sq. ft.), the installation process typically takes between 5 to 10 business days, weather permitting. The timeline is broken down into key phases. Day 1-2 is usually dedicated to excavation and building the compacted base. Days 3-6 involve the meticulous process of laying and cutting the stone, which is the most time-consuming part, especially with irregular flagstone. The final day is for installing the polymeric sand, final compaction, and a thorough site cleanup. Larger or more complex projects with features like steps or walls can extend this timeline. Do natural stone patios require sealing, and how often?
Sealing a natural stone patio is optional but often recommended. A high-quality, breathable, penetrating sealer does not create a film but soaks into the stone to protect it from stains like oil, grease, or red wine. It can also enhance the natural colors of the stone and make it easier to clean. In our experience, sealing can also help protect the stone's surface from de-icing salts in the winter. If you choose to seal it, we recommend reapplying a professional-grade patio sealer every 3 to 5 years. We can advise on the best approach for the specific stone you choose for your natural stone patio installation, as some dense stones like granite benefit less from sealing than more porous ones like limestone.

What is the difference between natural stone and interlocking pavers?
The primary difference lies in the material itself. Natural stone, like flagstone or limestone, is quarried directly from the earth, meaning each piece is unique in color, texture, and shape. This provides a timeless, organic aesthetic. Interlocking pavers are manufactured from concrete, resulting in uniform shapes and colors for more structured, geometric patterns. While both require a similar compacted base for installation, natural stone often requires more skilled labor for cutting and fitting. Cost is another factor; natural stone is typically a higher-end, more expensive material. How do you manage drainage to prevent water pooling on the patio?
Proper water management is built into our process from the start. Every patio we design has a calculated slope, typically 1/4 inch of fall for every linear foot, to direct surface water away from the home's foundation and into a safe area like a lawn or garden bed. The grade is subtle and often unnoticeable, but it is critical for performance. For properties with heavier clay soil or existing drainage problems, we may recommend installing a French drain along the patio edge or incorporating a permeable patio design with clear stone joints to allow water to percolate through the base. A successful natural stone patio installation must solve, not create, water issues.
