Can you install a composite deck over my old wood frame?
This is a possibility, but it requires a thorough professional inspection. In our experience, the lifespan of composite decking (25+ years) often exceeds that of a typical pressure-treated wood frame (15-20 years). If we are to install new composite decks, we must ensure the substructure can last just as long. We will meticulously check your existing frame for any signs of rot, insect damage, or structural weakness. We also verify that the joist spacing meets the specific requirements of the composite decking manufacturer, which is often 16 inches on centre or less. If the frame is in excellent condition and up to code, we can proceed; otherwise, we strongly recommend a full replacement for long-term safety and performance.

For quality and reliability in the Canadian market, we almost exclusively recommend and install products from Trex and TimberTech. Both are pioneers in the industry and offer superior capped composite technology with outstanding warranties, typically 25 to 50 years for stain and fade resistance. Trex is known for its eco-friendly composition, using 95% recycled materials. TimberTech (part of AZEK) offers a wide range of aesthetics, including some PVC options that are even more durable.
